The Emansio pocket outlook plug-in for windows mobile turns your email service into a Push Mail service, without requiring any additional server hardware.

Frequently asked Question #12

Configuration of Emansio Push Mail

Installation screens

The first time you configure Emansio (before you have a profile) you can choose either:

One of the available out-of-the-box configurations for popular email services

OR

"Other" which will give you an "empty" profile to configure your own email service.

1) Your profile requires a name. You can choose any name you wish, but don't use a profile name you already have in Pocket Outlook.

If you used any of the out-of-the-box profiles, you can still change this name to something of your own choice.

2) Screen 2 contains your mail server settings. As you can can see from the example you enter the server names wihtout any ports or any other "extras".

The server names are already configured for out-of-the-box email services, and should not need to be changed under normal circumstances.

Incoming: the IMAP server name that you use in Outlook or Thunderbird.

Outgoing: the SMTP server name that you use, rember that this MUST be a server that is accessible from "the internet". Emansio supports SMTP Auth (you will enter information about this later)

Domain: the Domain setting let you configure....

3) On screen 3 you define the user name and password that you use to login to your IMAP (incoming) server. Often, but not always this is your screen name OR your email address.

Remember that both these fields may be case sensitive. Check with your email service provider if you are unsure!

4) On screen 4, enter the name and email address that you wish recipients of your emails to see when you send them mail.

5) If your SMTP (outgoing) server requires authentiction, you need to indicate this. Don't forget to enter your user name and password or alternatively tell Emansio Push Mail to use the same settings as for the IMAP incomming mail server.

These settings are pre-configured for the out-of-the-box email services, and should not need to be changed under normal circumstances.

6) Screen 6 lets you define how to deal with deleted messages and new messages.

Expunge messages after delete: selecting this option will trigger Emansio Push Mail to actually delete messages in your server INBOX, not only mark them as deleted.

Get message headers only: you can choose to get only the message headers or to get the entire message.

You can also limit the amount of a message that is downloaded. In most cases 1k is enough for any text email. This limitation can be overridden when reading your email if you click on "get the rest of this message".

Be aware that these settings can have a tremendous impact on your data usage, and unless you are using a flat-rate data plan, we would recommend that you do not download any more data than necessary, as it wll cost you money!

7) To avoid clogging your device with old email, we recommend that you only keep emails from the last 10 days or so.

Note: This setting does not remove the email from your mail account, it simply tells the Emansio Push Mail client not to synchronize older emails to your Windows Mobile device.

8) Screen 8 lets you define which folders in your account that Emansio Push Mail should use for storage of deleted and sent messages.

Deleted Mail: be aware that sometimes the "real name" of folders may differ from what you "see" in your email client. An example of this is that Thuderbird always names the Trash folder "Deleted" independent of what the "real" name of the folder is.

Sent Mail: again it is important that the name of the folder is exactly right (see deleted for more information)

These settings are normally pre-configured for the out-of-the-box email services, and should not need to be changed under normal circumstances.

9) Screen 9 let you define which server ports are used for incoming mail and to transmit outgoing mail. You can also determine when and how to use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) with your servers.

Incoming mail server: if your mail service provider told you to use port 143, then normally you should NOT tick the "Use encrypted connection"

Outgoing mail server: if your mail service provider told you to use port 25, than normally you should NOT tick the "Use encrypted connection".

These settings are pre-configured for the out-of-the-box email services, and should not need to be changed under normal circumstances.

12) Once the Emansio Setup process is complete, you can open the Emansio Control to check the status of your Emansio Push Mail application

(Start -> Programs -> Emansio Control)

Click the "Log" tab to reveiw activity between your Emansio Push Mail application and your email server. Once your device has synchronized your mail box (the log indicates Client state = IDLE).

We recommend a soft reset (reboot) of your Windows Mobile device at this stage to clear the device memory.
